Helping Dogs Walk, Run, and Play Comfortably Again

A medial luxating patella (MLP), commonly referred to as a luxating kneecap, is one of the most frequently diagnosed orthopedic conditions in dogs. This condition occurs when the kneecap (patella) slips out of its normal groove within the knee joint, causing discomfort, limping, and instability. While some dogs may only experience occasional symptoms, more severe cases can lead to chronic pain, arthritis, and reduced mobility if left untreated.

At TLC Pet Hospital, we offer surgical treatment for medial luxating patella to help restore proper knee function, reduce pain, and improve your dog's quality of life. Our goal is to help your pet return to normal daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.

What Is a Medial Luxating Patella?

The patella, or kneecap, normally glides within a groove at the end of the femur as the knee bends and straightens. In dogs with medial luxating patella, the kneecap slips toward the inside of the leg and out of its normal position. This can cause the knee joint to function improperly and place additional stress on surrounding structures.

The condition is commonly seen in small and toy breed dogs but can also occur in larger breeds. Some dogs are born with anatomical abnormalities that predispose them to patellar luxation, while others may develop the condition due to injury or trauma.

Over time, repeated displacement of the kneecap can contribute to joint damage and the development of arthritis.

How MLP Surgery Helps

Medial luxating patella surgery is designed to stabilize the kneecap and restore proper alignment within the knee joint. Depending on your dog's specific condition, the procedure may involve reshaping the patellar groove, adjusting soft tissues surrounding the joint, or repositioning structures that influence kneecap movement.

The benefits of surgery often include improved limb function, reduced pain, increased stability, and a lower risk of long-term arthritis progression. Many dogs experience significant improvements in mobility and activity levels following recovery.
